HIV-1 infection presenting as Guillain-Barré Syndrome

چکیده
Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection causes numerous non-opportunistic as well as opportunistic neurologic illnesses. Neurologic manifestations include Guillain Barré Syndrome (GBS) which may present atypically. In areas endemic for HIV, the manifestation of GBS with a motor syndrome and axonal neuropathy is not uncommon. We report a 36-year-old man who presented with a subacute limb weakness associated with HIV infection.

The aim of this study was to compare the incidence and characteristics of GBS in HIV positive and -negative individuals. Methods: We performed a prospective,...

The term GBS is often considered to be synonymous with acute inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (AIDP), but with the increasing recognition of variants over the past few decades, the number of diseases that fall under the rubric GBS have grown to include axonal variants and more restricted variants, such 1 as Miller Fisher syndrome (MFS) Epidemiology The reported incidence rates ...
متن کاملA Case of Hyponatremia as the Presenting Symptom of Guillain- Barré Syndrome
Guillain-Barré (GBS) syndrome is an immune-mediated polyneuropathy that frequently presents with progressive muscle weakness. Hyponatremia is rarely the presenting feature of this demyelinating process, as it is normally described following the diagnosis. We report a case of Guillain-Barré syndrome diagnosed after presenting symptoms of severe hyponatremia. Awareness should be raised for consid...

Evidence of recent or ongoing Campylobacter jejuni infection has been found in approximately one out of every four cases of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS). It is increasingly accepted that C. jejuni infection is an important causal factor for GBS. However, the likelihood of GBS’ occurring following an episode of C. jejuni gastroenteritis has not been measured. The authors measured the incidence o...
